ARCHIVE FROM 6/30/14 I got back from an impromptu run with my kids this morning to find a DM from the man himself Dave Burgess. When I opened it I was surprised to see he was asking if I would host tonight because he is on a plane returning from vacation during #tlap. So for better or worse you are stuck with me as your host and lead pirate for the evening. I am a High School Social Studies Teacher, passionate about creating engaging lessons, the use of technology, and learning. I host #sstlap on Thursday's at 8 CST if you are a Social Studies teacher, or a pirate in general. If you want to know any more about me check out the other pages on my blog- http://timetravelingteach.weebly.com/ The questions for tonight might be a little buffet style hitting on a number of topics, but hopefully they make you think about how we can all improve our teaching practices and spread the Pirate Way! R = Rapport - How do you develop and maintain rapport with your students? The first few questions are based on this idea. TOPIC 1 The head Pirate recently issued a challenge to teachers to think of 5 words they want students to use to describe their classroom at the end of the year. The link and video are below. As part of this first topic, not only think about the 5 words, but how will you make this a reality? http://www.daveburgess.com/new/category/blog/. Q1 What 5 words do you want Ss to use to describe their time in your class? - How make it reality?#tlap TOPIC 2 -Compassion Compassion and #Youmatter! are definitely a component of building Rapport. Amazing educators like Angela Maiers@AngelaMaiers Brad Waid @Techbradwaid and Todd Nesloney @TechNinjaTodd are some of the driving forces behind the #YouMatter movement. Another champion of compassion based education is Oliver Schinkten @schink10. Each of these incredibly passionate educators have helped reinforce the Pirate message, especially in building and maintaining Rapport. The next question is based on the video below and the blog post that I wrote in response to it. The students are from the high school I teach at, and are amazing, courageous young people. Please read the post if you have a chance and let me know your thoughts. Thanks. http://timetravelingteach.weebly.com/blog Q2 - How do you show your students they matter and their uniqueness is valuable? #tlap TOPIC 3 -Introductions mean everything! I have been very fortunate to have many amazing educators in my PLN. They are innovative, creative and challenge me to do more. I have included a few examples of their introductory videos they present to their students at the beginning of the year. Please check them out and be ready to steal some inspiration. Q3 - How will do you and will you introduce yourself to your students to show them your class is different, they matter, and they don't want to miss a thing? #tlap Example 1- Micheal Matera from Milwaukee @mrmatera introductory video. How will you intro yourself to your students https://vimeo.com/72154079 Example 2- Lavender Krupp- @lavenderkrupp also made amazing videos that I modeled my own after. She used PowToons and imovie I believe to create the two below. Example 3- Kara Wilkins @kwilkinstchr example of a great introductory video that gave me the inspiration to try one of my own. Mine is clearly not as dynamic as her amazing video. TOPIC 4 - Breaking stereotypes- building self esteem! I saw this post earlier today and had to take stock of my own behavior in regard to the reference of "Like a girl." I have two young daughters and I want them to Always Act Like A Girl to the best of their ability every day. I want them to face the world with the confidence to be themselves. Please take a few minutes to view the video and be ready for our follow up discussion. Q4 Stereotypes, put downs are everywhere. How do you create a safe supportive learning environment that builds self esteem especially for girls? #tlap TOPIC 5 -Learning
Todd Nesloney is an amazing educator, passionate about technology as his twitter handle @techninjatodd suggests. He is also a tremendous resource who shares countless ideas and willing to engage in conversation with anyone. This summer he created another innovative learning experience through #summerLS. He issues challenges to teachers to help them learn and grow. I have already shared Dave Burgess's example. If you want to join the summer of learning, check out http://www.toddnesloney.com/%23!class-blog/c1ld3 This question is based on that idea. Q5 @toddnesloney created #summerLS with challenges for Ts to learn how will you help others learn this summer? #tlap TOPIC 6 Transformation through Technology After following #ISTE2014 and #notatiste14 I wrote about new technologies I learned through the posts shared by members of my PLN. Technology is a tool that can enhance students' experiences in our classrooms. The next question focuses on how you use technology. Be prepared to break your favorite button! Q6 What apps and how use to transform from mere classroom to an experience Ss are dying to be part of just like Ts at #iste2014 #tlap TOPIC 7 Passion There is not big introduction for this- simply take stock in what you are passionate about and be ready to rock your responses! Q7 What are you truly passionate about and how do you use them to transform your classroom experience #tlap
