ARCHIVE FROM 6/30/14 I got back from an impromptu run with my kids this morning to find a DM from the man himself Dave Burgess. When I opened it I was surprised to see he was asking if I would host tonight because he is on a plane returning from vacation during #tlap. So for better or worse you are stuck with me as your host and lead pirate for the evening. I am a High School Social Studies Teacher, passionate about creating engaging lessons, the use of technology, and learning. I host #sstlap on Thursday's at 8 CST if you are a Social Studies teacher, or a pirate in general. If you want to know any more about me check out the other pages on my blog- http://timetravelingteach.weebly.com/ The questions for tonight might be a little buffet style hitting on a number of topics, but hopefully they make you think about how we can all improve our teaching practices and spread the Pirate Way! R = Rapport - How do you develop and maintain rapport with your students? The first few questions are based on this idea. TOPIC 1 The head Pirate recently issued a challenge to teachers to think of 5 words they want students to use to describe their classroom at the end of the year. The link and video are below. As part of this first topic, not only think about the 5 words, but how will you make this a reality? http://www.daveburgess.com/new/category/blog/. Q1 What 5 words do you want Ss to use to describe their time in your class? - How make it reality?#tlap TOPIC 2 -Compassion Compassion and #Youmatter! are definitely a component of building Rapport. Amazing educators like Angela Maiers@AngelaMaiers Brad Waid @Techbradwaid and Todd Nesloney @TechNinjaTodd are some of the driving forces behind the #YouMatter movement. Another champion of compassion based education is Oliver Schinkten @schink10. Each of these incredibly passionate educators have helped reinforce the Pirate message, especially in building and maintaining Rapport. The next question is based on the video below and the blog post that I wrote in response to it. The students are from the high school I teach at, and are amazing, courageous young people. Please read the post if you have a chance and let me know your thoughts. Thanks. http://timetravelingteach.weebly.com/blog Q2 - How do you show your students they matter and their uniqueness is valuable? #tlap TOPIC 3 -Introductions mean everything! I have been very fortunate to have many amazing educators in my PLN. They are innovative, creative and challenge me to do more. I have included a few examples of their introductory videos they present to their students at the beginning of the year. Please check them out and be ready to steal some inspiration. Q3 - How will do you and will you introduce yourself to your students to show them your class is different, they matter, and they don't want to miss a thing? #tlap Example 1- Micheal Matera from Milwaukee @mrmatera introductory video. How will you intro yourself to your students https://vimeo.com/72154079 Example 2- Lavender Krupp- @lavenderkrupp also made amazing videos that I modeled my own after. She used PowToons and imovie I believe to create the two below. Example 3- Kara Wilkins @kwilkinstchr example of a great introductory video that gave me the inspiration to try one of my own. Mine is clearly not as dynamic as her amazing video. TOPIC 4 - Breaking stereotypes- building self esteem! I saw this post earlier today and had to take stock of my own behavior in regard to the reference of "Like a girl." I have two young daughters and I want them to Always Act Like A Girl to the best of their ability every day. I want them to face the world with the confidence to be themselves. Please take a few minutes to view the video and be ready for our follow up discussion. Q4 Stereotypes, put downs are everywhere. How do you create a safe supportive learning environment that builds self esteem especially for girls? #tlap TOPIC 5 -Learning
Todd Nesloney is an amazing educator, passionate about technology as his twitter handle @techninjatodd suggests. He is also a tremendous resource who shares countless ideas and willing to engage in conversation with anyone. This summer he created another innovative learning experience through #summerLS. He issues challenges to teachers to help them learn and grow. I have already shared Dave Burgess's example. If you want to join the summer of learning, check out http://www.toddnesloney.com/%23!class-blog/c1ld3 This question is based on that idea. Q5 @toddnesloney created #summerLS with challenges for Ts to learn how will you help others learn this summer? #tlap TOPIC 6 Transformation through Technology After following #ISTE2014 and #notatiste14 I wrote about new technologies I learned through the posts shared by members of my PLN. Technology is a tool that can enhance students' experiences in our classrooms. The next question focuses on how you use technology. Be prepared to break your favorite button! Q6 What apps and how use to transform from mere classroom to an experience Ss are dying to be part of just like Ts at #iste2014 #tlap TOPIC 7 Passion There is not big introduction for this- simply take stock in what you are passionate about and be ready to rock your responses! Q7 What are you truly passionate about and how do you use them to transform your classroom experience #tlap

Not sure what to discuss tonight, except to direct you to the idea of summer learning- link to last post about edcampSSTLAP
The ideas of what to talk about are swirling around in my head, so tonight is a smorgasbord or hodgepodge of topics that may or may not make sense, but I am hoping will get us thinking and sharing. Q1 What topics, ideas, concepts etc. do you want to discuss this summer? #sstlap Add them to document http://goo.gl/hJCSwE Q2 would you be willing to participate in a GHO session of #sstlap? What topic might you be willing to moderate? Q3 The world is coming to an end- who are the top 3 people that should be saved and why? #sstlap Q4 You can build a time capsule for your class, what do you include and why? #sstlap Q4b- how would you use a time capsule activity in your classroom? #sstlap Q5 You have to explain a difficult or "boring" topic, ID topic and HOOK you would use - be specific #sstlap Q6 How can you use the Amazing Race or other Game Show in your class for next year? #sstlap Q7 Prime the Pump- how can you create anticipation for a lesson for next year? ID topic and idea #sstlap Q8 Your Admin is coming in to observe- what lesson would you like them to see and why? #sstlap Q9 You are assigned new class next year- how do you prepare for class? #sstlap Tonight's Archives 6/26/14 ISTE 2014 is about to begin along with so many other great conferences throughout the summer. I am signed up to go to edcampOshkosh later this summer, and would love to go to more, but finances hinder the big trips. So what about an edcampSSTLAP? Could we create a virtual edcamp using GHO? Yes there is a limit of 10 per session, but if you are On Air, others can view and share.
So first step- are there topics people are willing to share? @Mrmatera and I have talked about gamification, and I think he would be an awesome person to lead a session on that. What about use of apps, or other tech that has helped you engage students in your classroom? Or what about Genius Hour - who has done it, what is your experience, and why should others do it? How do we engage students? We want to have them experience things, but how do they get the basis, or background knowledge to do this? How do you instruct students so they are knowledgeable to produce the product you desire? I started this document last week, and am hoping for more assistance- http://goo.gl/gUHRHl #SSTLAP Summer Learning Add some GHO topics, suggestions for sessions. How do you get students, even the quiet ones engaged in the conversation? This is about strategies- discussion tactics, backchanneling, what ever you use and have seen work. I am tossing out ideas to jump start your thinking. Differentiation- how do you do this in your class? Do you do it in instruction or only in assessment? Assessment practices in a #sstlap classroom- how do you assess and grade learning in an engaged classroom? Please jump in and add your own ideas, I don't want to direct your summer of learning, I want to collaborate with you. Post on the document above, post in #sstlap - DM me ideas. Let's engage in conversations in more depth than 140 characters. Who is up for this? Summer!!! Imagine the kids screaming the word as the run for the nearest water park. Got the idea? Good, summer is upon us so tonight we begin our summer learning adventure. Q1 who do you want to connect w/ this summer to help create ticket lessons? #sstlap Q2 how will you make this connection happen? #sstlap Q3 what are your PD goals and any scheduled summer events? #sstlap Q4 what is on your reading list for the summer? Why. I need help. #sstlap Q5 rejuvenation-- what are your plans for rest relaxation and recooperation? #sstlap Q6 professional challenges? Should we ceeate some for summer session? GDoc #sstlap Q7 summer hosting schedule and topics. I heard some suggest this interest? #sstlap My kids have end of year celebration at local Dairy Queen so I will likely miss most of #sstlap tonight. But I did my homework and have prepared questions. Q1 what are you doing/planning for end of year wrap up/ celebration? #sstlap Q2 what is your proudest moment of his year? #sstlap Q3 what is your ticket lesson for this year? # sstlap Q4 how has #tlap impacted your relationships this year and your efforts? #sstlap Q5 Ss are leaving your room for the last time this year- what Ss will you miss the most? Why #sstlap Q6 what did you learn from your year as a pirate that has changed your teaching most? #tlap Q7 what are your summer plans to continue growth as a pirate? Anyone up for GHO sessions? #sstlap Q8 summer schedule for #sstlap every other Thursday? Thought? |
